More and more, international travelers find themselves flying two or more airlines on their journey, even though the trip is marketed and booked by a single carrier, which also awards the frequent-flier miles and provides customer service. And antitrust immunity, which is held by several airline alliances, is a sort of virtual merger that allows competing carriers to cooperate on scheduling, operations and marketing.
